After any accident, the single most important thing you can do is also the simplest: get checked by a doctor, and do it soon. It protects your health first, and your case second.

Your health comes first

Adrenaline hides pain. Injuries to the neck, back, and head in particular can feel minor at first and become serious over the following days. A prompt exam catches what you cannot feel yet.

The record you are creating

Medical records do more than guide your treatment. They connect your injuries to the accident and show how serious they are. When there is a long gap between the accident and the first visit, an insurer will often argue that the injury must not have been that bad, or that it came from something else.

A few habits that help

  • Follow the treatment plan your provider gives you, and keep your follow-up appointments.
  • Keep every bill, referral, and discharge paper.
  • Tell each provider how the injury happened, in the same plain terms each time.

None of this has to be complicated. See a doctor, follow through, and keep your paperwork. That alone puts you in a far stronger position.
